SEGA announces Sonic Boom for Wii U and 3DS

The next installment in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, Sonic Boom, will hit Wii U and 3DS sometime in 2014, SEGA announced at a press event in New York today.

Sonic Boom will feature new character models, combat and exploration as well as collaborative gameplay. The game will also introduce the Energy Beam (or Enerbeam, for short), a "tether mechanic that will allow the Sonic Boom world to be discovered in totally unique ways."

Big Red Button Entertainment is behind development on the Wii U version while Sanzaru Games is working on the 3DS adaptation.

Tails, Knuckles and Amy will join Sonic on this adventure, each are playable characters with their own distinct abilities. According to SEGA of America producer Stephen Frost, the four protagonists are at times split up, but always accompanied by at least one other.

"There'll be plenty of sections that [the four characters] are together, at minimum there'll always be two players in the experience, depending on the level or the setting," Frost told Examiner. "So you'll always, if you're playing single-player, you'll always have at least two players to swap out, but there will be a lot of key areas where the four of them will be together as well."

He later adds, "If you're playing single-player you can choose any character at any time."

Dr. Eggman was also briefly mentioned at the event and said to play a different role than his usual, though SEGA did not go into any further detail.

The game will take place before the events of the Sonic Boom CG animated television series announced in October 2013 -- also slated to launch this year -- and is the final title in SEGAs three-game exclusive deal with Nintendo.

SEGA has yet to give a release date, expect more information in the coming months. Until then, check out the trailer shown at the press event above.
