Sega acquires Relic Entertainment

SEGA announced today that it has acquired Relic Entertainment (also referred to as THQ Canada) after THQ auctioned off all of the company's assets in chapter 11 bankruptcy.

Relic has developed some popular games including Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War and Company of Heroes. Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War to date has sold over 7 million copies worldwide while Company of Heroes has sold over 4 million. Both are PC games.

Although SEGA specifically announced it now owned the intellectual property rights for the Company of Heroes franchise (of which Company of Heroes 2 is slated for release later this year), there has been no official word yet on whether or not they also acquired the rights to Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War. SEGA has simply mentioned the series in regards to how successful Relic has been as a developer, but hasn't said that they acquired the franchise. One would assume this would probably be the case but there it is definitely strange there has been no announcement yet.

"We are incredibly excited to welcome Relic Entertainment into the Sega family. They are a highly respected development studio, with Company of Heroes and the Warhammer series both testament to the pedigree of their games” said Jurgen Post, President and COO at SEGA Europe Ltd., in an official press release. “This acquisition is a strong strategic fit for us and completely in line with our focus on developing new and existing content.”
