A Daily Word from the Word for Monday, September 16, 2013
“For thus says the Lord to the house of Israel: ‘Seek Me and live.’” – Amos 5:4
Who do you seek so that you can live? Is it money, career, or a relationship, my brother? Or is it love in all the wrong places, my sister? What about the rest of you, family?
The Hebrew word for “seek” as used in this verse is darash (pr. daw-rash), and means “follow, worship, inquire, require” (Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance). Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary defines “worship” as “to show respect and love for God.” No one can take God’s place but the One True Living God. When you worship anyone or anything other than God, you are making that person or thing a god—an idol. And you are attempting to replace and exalt that object of your worship with the only position that is reserved for God Almighty.
The Lord God Himself states His identity and command as He proclaims the source of life: I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. You shall have no other gods before Me” (Exodus 20:1-3).
God did not give us this instruction to restrict us. The Father of life gave us this commandment so that we can have life and life abundantly! (John 10:10). Dead things cannot produce life; yet sadly, too many people, including God’s own children, look to dead things to raise them up. Jesus Christ Himself declared “let the dead bury their own dead” (Luke 9:60). Stop looking for life in dead things!
We are to “seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto it (Matthew 6:33). People get it backwards and seek the add-ons, rather than seeking the One who adds and multiplies to life. Seek to love the Blessor more than the blessing, and then your blessings will abound! I do not want any blessing that would cause me to love it more than my Blessed Savior; for then the blessing is no longer a blessing to me; but rather a curse. The Lord knows that I do not want anything, even if it appears good, if that thing will cause me to love it more than my Beloved, Loving, Faithful Father. A true blessing will cause you to love the Blessor even more because He gave it to you, and it points back to Him!
The Apostle Luke testifies of this truth: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind” (Luke 10:27). We should love God above all, including our own fathers, mothers, sons, daughters, and other loved ones. I love God more because He gave me my family!
To “live” as used here is chayah (pr. khaw-yaw), which means “to revive, make alive, give (promise) life, nourish up, preserve, repair, restore, save.” All the money in the world can’t save you, my brother. And that man can’t save you, my sister. Do you need to be revived, nourished, repaired, and restored? Then call on the life-giving Name of the Lord, and you will be saved (Romans 10:13).
Father, thank You for You. Help us, Holy God, to seek You more. Show us, Sovereign Savior, how to seek Your Face. We want You to take us deeper in Your love. We desire a more intimate relationship with You, our Yehovah. Breathe on us, Holy Spirit, breathe on us. Help us to let go of everything else, so that we can cling tighter to You. In Jesus Name, we thank You that we are wrapped in Your love, and we are content in You. Amen and Amen.
Take action! Challenge your thinking! Choose to always seek the Lord first and foremost. Determine to dethrone yourself, and put God on the throne of your heart, where He rightfully belongs. And continue to fight the good fight of letting the dead bury their dead; for God, your Eternal Life, has already given you the victory!
If you have never received Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior, I encourage you to do it today, right now, by saying this prayer out loud: “Jesus, forgive me for my sins. I am sorry. I truly desire to be saved and reconciled back to God, my Father, through You. I receive Your sinless Blood as payment in full for my sins—past, present, and future. I now call You my Lord and Savior, and invite You to live within my heart, and to permanently live within me. I make You Lord over me and over my life from this moment on. Amen.” Congratulations! You are now a child of God, made whole and made new, by the Blood of Jesus Christ!
