Who do you trust? That’s the question I want answered before making a decision about my polarized sun glasses. Most anglers understand the importance of their sunglasses when it comes to fishing, but how do you choose the right one?
Selecting the right pair of sunglasses comes down to personal preference, but the trust factor comes in when you first begin your search for new sunglasses. Check with friends that are avid anglers and have had experience with polarized lenses and different manufacturers.
In my search I talked to several friends but one convinced me beyond a shadow of a doubt which way I wanted to go. His name is Kent Watson, crappie fishing pro. He views his sunglasses as a strategic weapon in his quest for tournament crappie. “Sunglasses,” he says, “are just as important as the other equipment we use.” Then he named his favorite brand, Fatheadz.
"Fatheadz Eyewear makes the best quality polarized fishing glasses for guys with normal or oversized heads anywhere,” says Kent. When he made this comment I understood the funny name. Fatheadz are quality sunglass at a reasonable price with a name that signifies that they are made to fit oversized heads.
Kent went on to describe his enlightenment when it came to sunglasses. “Before I started fishing tournaments I never wore sunglasses, I couldn’t find any that fit right and allowed me to see the line clearly. Once I tried the first pair of Fatheadz and started fishing with them all that changed.”
His next statement was the one that sold me on Fatheadz. “If I get out on the lake and find I don’t have them, I’m goin’ back to the truck and getting them.” He has learned to keep an extra pair in the boat, so that state of affairs does not occur. “I just don’t want to be without them,” says Kent. If he feels that strongly about his sunglasses I think they are worth a try.
With the decision on brand made, I began my quest for a new pair of Fatheadz sunglasses as well as a new pair of optics. I was not disappointed. I needed prescription glasses, so I obtained a prescription from my eye doctor and made the connection with Fatheadz.
My first thought was just how comfortable they are. My optics are in a Stand frame and my sunglasses are in the Modello frame. I love them both. They are both stylish and good looking. I have had numerous comments on how good they look. I could not have been happier, or could I?
A couple days later I wore my prescription, polarized Modello’s on a fishing trip. It was just like Kent had said. I was using very small 6 pound test braided line and it was easily visible as I cast. Then, I noticed I was seeing the bottom in waters I had fished many times before. I began to wonder if the water had cleared or the Fatheadz were giving me that much better penetration. I concluded the glasses were better than what I was using before. Now I was really sold and needing to thank Kent for his recommendation of Fatheadz.
Here are a few things to consider if you are in the market for a new pair of shades or optics. Plastic frames are generally lighter in weight, but cannot be adjusted like a metal frame can. Nose pads are another consideration. If you prefer a nose pad molded into the frame choose a frame like my Modello. If you want actual nose pads you can choose a frame like the Stand I chose for my optics.
Other options include rimless, semi-rimless and full rim, it’s all a matter of personal preference. Rimless frame have no rim around the lens at all, just a bridge and the two temples. Semi-rimless frames have a frame only around the top of the lens, with a wire around the bottom of the lens, to make it appear there is no frame. And full rim frames obviously have a rim all the way around the lens.
You can even choose high wrap frames that fit the contour of your face, or more traditional square fit with no wrap. If you try on a frame and it rests on your cheek, you might want a frame with a shorter height that won’t touch your cheek. Just take your time, consider your options and choose a Fatheadz that fits your needs.
Needless to say, Fatheadz can accommodate your choice what ever it is. And, for those with larger heads, the comfort and style is the ultimate payoff.
