Poring over the seed catalogs trying to get ready for spring and the 2013 veggie garden? Here are a few new varieties of vegetables justcrying out to be tried. Sometimes, these are varieties which are new to the particular firm, but usually they are brand new varieties on their first release. Here are just a few.
Laguna carrots: These are Nantes style carrots, thick and particularly robust averaging 6” in length and extremely straight – probably good for containers. 65 days to mature and touted as sweet and disease resistant. Laguna’s are equally productive when planted spring or fall crop.
Patio snacker cucumber:
A fast one, Patio snacker is ready to pick 39 days from transplant or 60 days overall. 6” to 8” fruits are so non bitter that Jung’s tells us they can be eaten peel and all, right from the plant. With a 5’ vine it is excellent for container growing.
Solstice is a hybrid muskmelon of impressive weight, running 6 to 9 lbs. 76 days from germination to table is quick for a melon of that size. Presented as extraordinarily sweet with deep orange flesh this variety is well worth a try!
Cayenne blend:
Cayenne blend peppers are tiny – 3” – multi colored cayennes in a mixture of BRIGHT colors and HOT flavors, just right for those who like heat in their cuisine. Long to develop at 94 days the blend presents green, red, purple and orange fruits. These could be fun and a splash of color as well.
Lacinite kale:
New to Park’s but an old variety sometimes known as dinosaur kale, lacinite hales back to the first kales cultivated in the Mediterranean so long ago. Leaves grow 2’ long but just 3” wide, wrinkled and packed with flavor according to the catalog. This is a high yielding heirloom variety ready for the pot 62 days from transplant.
Patricia radish:
A French breakfast type ready to pull just 27 days from sowing, uniform, cylindrical and equally at home in the spring or fall garden. Sturdy greens are great in salads too. The nutritional and health benefits of radishes are just beginning to receive more prominence in the public eye, Patricia is a prime example.
Cassidy green beans:
Cassidy beans are compact bush type green beans that are held out of the dirt on very sturdy plants. The 5” to 6” inch beans are prolific and ready in 56 days. Cassidy is touted as HIGHLY disease resistant.
Hurakan squash:
Called a “grey” zucchini, hurakan is actually several shades of pale green and quite plump. It is a bush style plant and ready in only 50 days. It is presented as quite prolific.
Peppermint chard:
Thus called for its color which is bright pink and white on the stems and deep green on the leaves, peppermint is ready in 62 days from planting and can be enjoyed if cut on a cut and come again system all the way until first frost. It is said to grow back very well.
