If you love music and a good laugh, you’ll want to see “Avenue Q School Edition,” a Youth Works production presented by Theater Works at the Peoria Center for the Performing Arts, 8355 W. Peoria Ave. in Peoria, Ariz. The Arizona premiere opens Friday, Feb. 8 and runs through Sunday, Feb. 24.

“Avenue Q School Edition” is based on an original concept by Jeff Marx and Robert Lopez, who created the Broadway musical “Avenue Q.” The Broadway musical is the winner of three Tony Awards: Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book.

According to Chris Hamby, Theater Works Director of Youth and Puppetry, the playwrights have adjusted their award winning show to a PG-13 rating, thus allowing it to be performed by high school students. "The modifications preserve the dramatic intention and integrity of the production, while providing edits that make the theme and message more appropriate for a wider audience," he adds.

The musical tells the timeless story of a recent college grad named Princeton who moves into a shabby New York Apartment way out on Avenue Q and soon realizes that this is not your ordinary neighborhood. He and his new friends struggle to find jobs, dates and purpose in life.

The Theater Works production is directed by Chris Hamby and musically directed by Ken Goodenberger, with book by Jeff Whitty, original music by Robert Lopez and lyrics by Jeff Marx.
