Have you ever wondered how the Appalachians came to be? Did you know that the Himalayas are still being formed through tectonic movements of the earth's crust? Now, you do. And what's even better is that travelers to Knoxville and locals alike can find out more.
The Continents Collide: The Appalachians and the Himalayas exhibition is available at the McClung Museum on the University of Tennessee campus in Knoxville. It will run from January 14, 2012 to May 20, 2012. Admission is free.
Rock samples, a fifteen minute film and images tell the story of how these two great mountain chains formed. Visitors will also learn how the Appalachians and Himalayas are changing. They will also learn about the forces that continue to impact both mountain ranges.
There are two exhibits in the display. One tells the story of the Himalayas. The other hits much closer to home. The story will be told about the Appalachian Mountains that visitors and people in the Knoxville area are so familiar with. The plate tectonics and the erosion processes are explained.
Maps, video presentations will help visitors develop a better understanding and finer appreciation of the beauty of the East Tennessee area.
The Continents Collide: The Appalachians and the Himalayas is a McClung Museum exhibition that everyone can enjoy. Anyone who has a fondness for the Smoky Mountains may want to make it a point to visit the museum.
The McClung Museum is part of the Smithsonian Institution Affiliations Program. Rather than focus on one particular element the McClung is considered to be a general museum. This means that the museum displays exhibitions on subjects ranging from art to geology. Both permanent and traveling exhibitions can be found here.
Visitors can obtain a parking pass from the guard shack on Circle Park Drive. It is easily seen as you pull into Circle Park. There is no charge for parking or admission.
