Ringo Starr is one of the diverse group of performers featured on the just-released tribute album "Listen To Me: Buddy Holly," which hit the streets on Tuesday.
Peter Asher, who produced the album, told us in an interview how he got the former Beatle involved. "I was trying to decide whom I should ask to sing 'Think It Over' and listening to Buddy’s version in the car. It was actually Ringo’s drumming which first made me think of him. I started to hear the kind of splashy rock and roll shuffle of which he is the master. It is easy to forget (in all fuss over being a Beatle) that Ringo is an astonishingly innovative musician in his own right who changed rock and roll drumming forever. Once I was hearing Ringo playing the drum part I realized it was also a song he could sing very well."
So Asher asked him. He said it didn't take long for Ringo to decide to do the track. "He promptly responded 'Let me think it over'! He did so and we met for a cup of tea at his house a few mornings later and he told me he thought it was a good idea and he would love to do it. And he delivered a brilliant version."
Here's a video of Ringo singing the song. Also on "Listen To Me: Buddy Holly" are Stevie Nicks, Brian Wilson, The Fray, Natalie Merchant, Patrick Stump, Jackson Browne, Chris Isaak, Cobra Starship and Pat Monahan of Train.
