One of the most unique places to visit in Colorado is Manitou Springs. The most eye-catching thing you will see in the downtown area is the shape of the town. Most town shapes are linear and simple. The town in Manitou is shaped with curves and different streets hide behind the main one--down a hill: a street within a street. You will walk along a curve and the overall appearance of stores and other places of business and the type of buildings (adobe and others) are worth site seeing.
You can spend hours browsing the shops, some of which sell tourist items. Native American artifacts, jewelry, clothing, ice cream and other businesses are there. In America’s early days, the natives used to consider Manitou Springs a sacred place. That makes it fitting to have a store selling cultural items from Native American lore. You should arrive early in Manitou on the day you have off from work so you can give yourself enough time to site see and do everything you can do there for a vacation day. Meanwhile, Manitou has some good restaurants like the Stagecoach Inn and others.
After sampling the restaurants, there is also the Iron Springs Chateau which gives you a dinner and theater show. You can try that before or after you take the cog railway up the side of Pikes Peak in Colorado Springs. In fact, Manitou Springs is right next door to Colorado Springs. You can drive down Old Colorado City in the Springs and it leads straight into Manitou.
The Manitou park will be on your right and is a great place for a picnic or a place to walk around with your spouse. There is also a playground in the park for children. More on Manitou in a future article.
