See Brigadoon performed at Woodminster Amphitheater, high in the Oakland hills

Do you enjoy watching theater with city lights twinkling in the background, enhancing the stars onstage? Then you'll love this summer's production of the 1947 musical Brigadoon, running September 4-13 at Woodminster.

Brigadoon combines iconic Agnes De Mille choreography, a magical storyline worthy of Harry Potter, and the powerhouse team of Lerner and Loewe. The best-known song from this musical is “Almost Like Being in Love.”

It tells the tale of a very unlikely couple, Tommy and Fiona, whose love seems fated when they meet on the one day in 100 years that Brigadoon is visible to the outside world.

Tommy, while beguiled by Fiona’s modest ways, is a confirmed cynical with a fiancée back in the city. He doesn’t completely believe in the simple goodness of Brigadoon, let alone his love for Fiona, so he leaves her broken-hearted. I won’t give away the ending, but it is a satisfying one.

Along the way, you’ll enjoy modernized Scottish dancing, a village that appears once every century, true love and slapstick comedy. Adults love Brigadoon for its romance, and kids for its magic. And who doesn’t love Tony-winning choreography?

Woodminster is at 3300 Joaquin Miller Road, and there are posted signs to guide you. Admission is $25-40, with one child under 16 attending with a parent admitted free. Picnic space can be reserved before the show. Bring cushions and bundle up—it can get cold up on the hill.

Learn more about the stage version of Brigadoon, and watch the trailer from the Gene Kelly, Van Johnson and Cyd Charisse 1954 movie. See the Scottish landmark that gave the musical its name.
