San Francisco Playhouse, the Bay Area's premiere Off Broadway style theater is now entering their second decade and a move to a new venue. This historical newly renovated 199 seat theater is ideally suited for those looking for a more intimate theatrical experience. During the year, they produce a diverse line-up of shows ranging from original works to revivals of more traditional fare.

From now through April 19th, theatergoers can catch Bauer, the world premiere of a San Francisco Playhouse commissioned work that explores the life of the forgotten painter Rudolph Bauer. Then April 29th to June 14th will feature Seminar, a biting comedy by playwright Theresa Rebeck. The 2013-2014 season closes with a production of the musical Into the Woods by James Lapine (book) and Stephen Sondheim (music and lyrics) which will run from June 24th to September 6th. Among the awards they've received for their overall productions, acting, and design include the SF Weekly Best Theatre Award and the Bay Guardian’s Best Off-Broadway Theatre Award.

As the San Francisco Playhouse is located at 450 Post Street right in the heart of Union Square, it's accessible to many popular restaurants and hotels. Those looking for a pre-theater meal might want to check out the Fallon Restaurant who shares space with the theater. Anyone who mentions they are going to a play at San Francisco Playhouse gets a complimentary plate of 6 oysters or a dessert at Farallon (one per party).
