There are only two more weekends to catch the fifth annual Alcyone Festival presented by the Halcyon Theatre. This festival celebrates the depth and breadth of women writing for the stage. To date the Alcyone Festival has presented 26 works by women, only two of which had previously been seen in Chicago.
The first Alcyone Festival, was held in the summer of 2008 and Halcyon Theatre produced the works of 10 early female playwrights spanning almost 1000 years in rotating repertory. These works have been seldom (and mostly never) seen on contemporary stages.
This year's festival theme is A New Dawn, A New Day including the works of writers from Texas to Maine to Chicago. The five plays in this year's festival are hilarious, heartbreaking, musical, moving, and topical. With both new plays and a classical work by women.
Based in Chicago, Halcyon Theatre was formed in 2006 to connect people, transform our borders and ascend toward a more just union. Their artistic philosophy is driven by the belief that at every point of human history where there has been an explosion of artistic creativity, it has happened when different cultures and traditions have met and learned from each other.
Halcyon’s work includes main stage productions, along with the Alcyone Festival (final two weeks) and Ceyx Series. As an extension of their mission, Halcyon provides a platform for artists to grow and reach their full potential: including our Compass Lab, and the Nest writing workshops and labs.
Another exciting event for the Halcyon Theatre is that they are now the Theatre-in-Residence at the Christ Lutheran Church in Albany Park. This completes a longtime dream to have their full-time home be in this awesome neighborhood.
If you have not yet allowed yourself to be taken away by the works in the 2013 Alcyone Festival you have until the end of September.
