If the security appears disorganized and out of control when responding to incidents like today, it is because they are.
Citizens who are living in the DC beltway are fully aware of security organizations and their mechanisms because they have a presence nearly everywhere you turn. There are layers of it from local city and county police, to the Metro police, to various elements of Homeland Security, the FBI, various military police, and an entire executive branch organization devoted to it.
Now, with all of those people and facilities, one would think that lone gunmen would not be able to walk into an office building be it military or commercial loaded with weapons and ammunition and not be seen and challenged upon their approach. That circumstance is simply unacceptable.
It comes from complacent and bored security personnel who are not properly supervised to be intensely devoted to their jobs while on duty. It also comes from deficient security plans by facility operators.
What is alarming and outrageous is to see the massive reaction to disasters after they occur and to no avail. Running around like chickens with their heads cut off may create the illusion of purpose, but to this analyst it appears to be mass confusion and inefficient and ineffective use of scarce resources.
Furthermore, if you observed some of the redundant tape played ad nauseam by CNN witness the large number of security personnel who are barely able to waddle down the sidewalk because they are overweight and unfit.
Americans have every right to complain about this massive deficiency. They should feel insecure so long as this bureaucracy is at work as it is today.
