The road to the state football tournament continues on Saturday throughout Minnesota and included a pair of Section 3AAAAA semifinal games.
First up is the Bloomington Kennedy Eagles at the Minneapolis Washburn Millers. The Eagles picked up their first win of the season with a 62-13 rout of the Minneapolis Southwest Lakers. It was also a breakout game for Kennedy running back Lucian Coutier as he rushed for 291 yards and seven touchdowns. No work from Eagle head coach Jon Anderson on if it is a school record.
Will Coutier have another game like Southwest? The prognosis is doubtful since he's going up against top seeded Washburn and their top running back Jeff Jones. The Millers defense has also got stronger since the opening game of the season against St. Paul Highland Park 56-50. They have only given up more than 20 points in two games this season and they probably will prevent Coutier from having another outstanding game.
The second game takes place at Bloomington Stadium as the Apple Valley Eagles face the second seeded Bloomington Jefferson Jaguars. It's a rematch of the September 6 game where the Jaguars held off the Eagles 12-6. Apple Valley ended the St. Louis Park Orioles season on Tuesday 52-16. De'Shawn Lewis clinched a semifinal berth in the first quarter with three touchdowns.
Jefferson, on the other hand is in a slump after winning their first two games. They have lost five of their last six and look to continue their road to state with a second win over Apple Valley. They will need to have a good, all-around offensive game in order to earn a trip to the section finals.
The winners play for the section title Friday, November 1. Bundle up. It's going to be chilly.
