Professor Barbara Sahakian of the University of Cambridge presented the latest findings that are designed to keep your brain fit for as long as you live at the Feb. 17, 2013, session of the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
Sahakian confirms a host of research that concludes keeping fit physically is an invaluable and certain means to keeping fit mentally. Exercise is good for your cognition, mood and physical health
Likewise dozens of research studies have confirmed that mental exercise keeps you mind fit as well. Learning new things is what makes your brain and mind stay healthy. Phone apps that exercise your brain are good ways to stay mentally alert.
There is a great need for more attention to mental fitness according to Dr. Sahakian. Twenty-five percent of people in the United States suffer some form of mental illness every year. Over forty percent of the people who are eventually diagnosed as having dementia do not realize they have dementia.
As the Baby Boomer generation ages, mental fitness will become more of a factor in health, health care, finance, and government because taking care of yourself mentally reduces the costs of mental health treatment by 46 percent.
