“The heart of human excellence often begins to beat when you discover a pursuit that absorbs you, frees you, challenges you, and gives you a sense of meaning, joy and passion.” – Terry Orlick
Happiness is when you really love what you do, and it needs to stretch you. If you find that what you do doesn’t reflect what you are passionate about, then consider doing a little self-exploration to determine what really gets your juices going. I mean, what do you really enjoy doing? Do you really like organizing things? Or working with numbers and calculations? Or is it perhaps helping others and/or giving sage advice? Hint: it is something that you naturally have a knack for, and it is effortless to you. Take note of what that is, and then find a way to incorporate that into a line of work where you can monetize your gifts and talents.
Your gifts and talents are worth far more than the paycheck you receive working a job just to pay the bills. Being fulfilled is more than just the paycheck. Don’t get me wrong. Money is great thing to have, and it can buy a lot of things that will bring happiness. However, at the end of the day, the money alone is not what drives most successful people to do what they do. Successful people have mastered a specific skill or talent that no one else can mimic, and they really find enjoyment in what they do. Can you find anyone else that does exactly what Oprah does? She is a great example of a person who really enjoys helping others in a unique way that has brought her great riches – and I’m not just talking about money, but overall richness and satisfaction in her life. Her true and authentic self-expression, her unique personality that no one else can ever copy, is in every weave of her business and work. And her determination to do something that she is passionate about has definitely helped her bank account very nicely I might add!
It is possible to earn a good living while you are doing something that you are passionate about. But some people forget that it doesn’t have to be a career to do what you love. Think of other ways you can express your talents and passions. Either pick up a hobby, give your time to a charitable cause that can really benefit from your gifts, or take on an extracurricular activity that you enjoy outside of work. This helps to feed your mental psyche so that you are getting a sense of satisfaction and to balance what you are not getting at work.
Why would you want to do this? Well, here are just a few small reasons…
- It brings meaning and purpose in life.
- It doesn’t feel like work.
- It brings a smile on your face.
- It is rewarding doing what you love
- You will have no regrets - later wishing you had done it
And the list goes on…
