Secret Service 'not sure' if they checked WVU Rifle team on White House visit

Well, the Secret Service undoubtedly checked the WVU Rifle team when they entered the White House compound, but the president did decide to joke a little in his speech to NCAA champions on Monday. The president said the Secret Service "wasn't sure" if they checked them on the way in.

This gathering was to honor NCAA champions from across the nation from several sports - excluding football and basketball. WVU was the only school that sent a rifle team, though. And it was an historic occasion for WVU, too.

As reported by WVUSports.com:

For the first time in school history, a West Virginia University athletic team will visit the White House and meet with the President of the United States for NCAA Champions Day.

Members of the WVU rifle team will meet with President Barack Obama on the afternoon of March 10, at the White House, in Washington, D.C., to celebrate the squad’s 2013 National Championship.

“This is a great honor,” says Mountaineer coach Jon Hammond. “We’re honored to be the first WVU team to attend the White House. This promises to be a great moment for the student-athletes, and I’m glad they have the chance to enjoy this experience. Hopefully, this day will be something they’ll look back on fondly when they’re older.”

While the White House visit is a first for the rifle team, winning championships is something that they're well-known for doing. They have won 15 national championships - more than any other school.
