Secret measures protect US electrical grid

Terrorists attacks on US electrical transmission lines hardly possible with secret protections in place

DALLAS (Jan. 24, 2011) – The constant fear of terrorists attacks shutting  down vast areas of the United States’ electrical supply have been addressed with security measures that must remain secret.

This assurance comes from Mayer Sasson, of Con Edison in New York, second year chairman of the energy policy committee for IEEE-USA that advises government and industry on energy concerns.  “What’s been happening at utilities across the country can’t be talked about,” says Sasson, “because it will be a break of security to reveal what utilities are really doing to provide a much increased security of the grid, but it is happening.”

Sasson was recorded by phone from his office and aired today on the ScienceNews Radio Network program, the Promise of Tomorrow with Colonel Mason.  The broadcast originates in Dallas, Texas, and can now be heard in complete detail at the website, archived for its world audience.
