For the second time in just days in Bloomer, Wisconsin, a Progressive Rail train derailed due to broken rails. The first derailment was on Nov 21, when three cars derailed and turned over. The second derailment was just nine days later on Nov 30, along the same stretch of railway. This time the derailment involved 18 cars, none of which turned over.
Progressive Rail’s CEO, Lon Van Gemert, says its train cars, which were filled with sand, derailed because of broken rails on the tracks.
Debbie Lotts, who lives just down the road from where the trains derailed, says, “The first one was six cars and three of them were pretty much tipped over and three were crooked on the tracks.”
Chippewa County Sheriff James Kowalczyk says Progressive will handle the clean-up privately because there were no hazardous materials spilled, roads blocked, or injuries, He also said there are no records of the Saturday derailment because "not every accident is required to be reported."
(Train derailments don't have to be reported? Who knew?)
Kowalczyk said, "These two incidents apparently did not cause any damage to the roadway, there was no spillage, and in reality there was really no need for law enforcement to respond to these two derailments that occurred here with in the last couple of weeks.”
These are interesting times in which we live . . . more new normal.
