Second Russian suicide bombing in less than 24 hours kills 14 on trolley bus

In the second terroristic suicide bombing in the Russian city of Volgograd in less than 24 hours, a male suicide bomber detonated himself on Dec. 30 while riding on a bus trolley, killing 14 people and injuring 28 more during Volgograd’s early morning rush hour.

Russian President Vladimir Putin once again ordered heightened and increased police protection as fears continue to increase of more Islamist terrorist attacks in advance of the Winter Olympics in Sochi, scheduled to begin on Feb. 7, according to Reuters.

Investigators said they believed a male suicide bomber set off the blast, a day after a similar attack killed at least 17 in the main rail station of a city that serves as a gateway to the southern wedge of Russian territory bounded by the Black and Caspian Seas and the Caucasus mountains.

One Reuters’ journalist described the carnage following today’s blast with the bus being reduced to “a twisted, gutted carcass, its roof blown off and bodies and debris strewn across the street.”

The blast on the bus was so strong as to blow out windows in a nearby apartment building.

"For the second day, we are dying. It's a nightmare," a woman near the scene said, her voice trembling as she choked back tears.

"What are we supposed to do, just walk now?"

The bomb used in today’s blast was described as being packed with the identical kinds of shrapnel used at the Volgograd train station yesterday, raising suspicions that the suicide bombings are connected.

Oleg Salagai, a spokesperson for the Russian Health Ministry, said:

"There was smoke and people were lying in the street."

"The driver was thrown a long way. She was alive and moaning ... Her hands and clothes were bloody,"

Media analysts are speculating that although Putin may be able to fortify security around Sochi where the Winter Olympic Games will be taking place, there is simply no way to protect the general Russian populace from these individualized, smaller scale terrorist attacks.
