Second quake hits the San Francisco Bay Area, near Berkeley, California

Another earthquake shook the San Francisco Bay Area, in Berkeley at 8:16 p.m.    It was a magnitude 3.8 and was centered on the Hayward fault.   Earlier on Thursday, at 2:44 p.m., a slightly stronger quake, 4.0, was centered near the same area.   More info on that quake here.

Seismologists say tonight's quake was centered near UC Berkeley's Memorial Stadium, which is in the process of being rebuilt following previous earthquake damage.   This afternoon's earthquake was centered in the Berkeley Hills, above the UC campus.

Many report that tonight's earthquake was stronger than this afternoon.   Seismologists say that is because the later quake was at a more shallow depth and so was felt more strongly at ground level.   Tonight's earthquake was an aftershock of this afternoon's quake, seismologists said Thursday evennig.

There have been no reports of serious damage or injury from either quake.   As routine after earthquakes, BART trains slowed in went into manual mode to give operators the oportunity to check the tracks for damage at slow speeds.
