“The Runaway King” - released on March 1st – is the stunning second installment in Jennifer A. Nielsen’s Ascendance Trilogy. It is a brilliant and timeless tale fraut with danger and adventure, lies and deadly truths that will take the reader’s breath away. With a gripping first sentence, “I had arrived early for my own assassination,” the reader is moved directly into the action. By the end of the first chapter, the reader realizes how complex Jaron’s problems are, as it was his friend who was trying to kill him.
In fact, when Jaron takes the throne, it’s just a few weeks later that his assassination attempt forces him into an even deadlier situation. Rumors of a coming war wind their way through the castle walls and Jaron feels the pressure mounting. For example, did King Vargan come to the funeral out of respect for the dead or to learn Jaron’s weaknesses?
With all this treachery, is it even possible to save the kingdom? Jaron braves new territory, new relationships, and new situations, especially since he doesn’t know who to trust. How far does one go to save this kingdom? Is it possible to go too far?
Nielsen weaves a tale of intrigue in this second installment. If you thought “The False Prince” was good, you are going to love the continuation of the story in book number two.
