After about a month off, Minnesota returns to home ice at Mariucci Arena with the 2014 Mariucci Classic. On tap Friday is a matchup with Colgate, and the winner will play the winner of RPI-Ferris State at 7pm on Saturday. FOX Sports North and BTN will share both Gopher games this weekend, with BTN picking up the Saturday night tilt. Both games are available on BTN2Go. Here are some numbers I’m looking at as we head into the weekend.
23: The 2014 edition marks the 23rd Mariucci Classic, with the Gophers winning thirteen titles. Minnesota are the defending champions.
80: Minnesota’s Kyle Rau is one point away from one hundred for his career. Rau would be the eightieth Gopher to hit the century mark and the first since Erik Haula.
8: Colgate’s Darcy Murphy leads the Raiders in goals with eight, which is two off his mark of ten from last season. He’s also third in his class with eighteen career goals.
21: No, we’re not playing blackjack. Gambling’s bad. Colgate head man Don Vaughan entered the 13-14 season with a 328-331-75 record, which puts him with the most wins in Raider history.
18: Minnesota’s 18-3-1 all-time versus the three opposing squads in the 2014 Mariucci Classic. The Gophers are a perfect 6-0-0 versus Colgate. Minnesota’s 9-2-0 versus RPI and 3-1-1 versus Ferris State.
36: In fifty-four games played, Minnesota’s Adam Wilcox has a 36-10-7 record. His career 1.96 goals against average is the best in Minnesota history.
17: In the last two games versus Colgate dating back to 2001 (both at Mariucci Arena), the Gophers have outscored the Raiders 17-0. There was an 8-0 win on Oct. 26th, 2001 followed the next night by a 9-0 W.
