Second fatal Volusia motorcycle accident Saturday near New Smyrna

Note: Story corrected to show the passenger flown to Halifax Hospital in Daytona Beach, and the driver taken to Bert Fish Memorial Hospital in New Smyrna Beach.

A second fatal motorcycle accident in Volusia County Saturday killed a motorcycle passenger, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. FHP spokesperson Sgt. Kim Montes says the motorcycle was eastbound on State Road 44 near Genesis Way around 4:55 Saturday afternoon, when the driver of the bike lost control for an unknown reason and the motorcycle ran off the road. Troopers say the bike then hit a barb-wired fence, ejecting both the driver and a passenger from the Honda motorcycle. The driver of the bike, 75-year old Clarence Sieb of Edgewater, was transported to Bert Fish Memorial Hospital in New Smyrna Beach but died from injuries in the crash. The motorcycle passenger, 78-year old Peggy Sieb of Edgewater, was flown to Halifax Hospital in Daytona Beach by the Volusia County Sheriff’s helicopter, and was reported to be in critical condition.

Earlier Saturday afternoon, a motorcyclist was also killed in an accident along Old Dixie Highway in Volusia County. Click here to view the story on that accident.
