Second ever fisherman's rally planned for Washington D.C., March 21, 2012

The first fisherman's rally in the nation’s capital was on February 24, 2010. The event brought about 5,000 recreational, commercial, and charter fishermen to the U. S. Capitol to protest unnecessary and burdensome fishing regulations that were putting many fishermen out of business and removing the opportunity for recreational anglers to enjoy the sport. That event included a couple dozen legislators from the House and Senate who came out to address the assembled fishermen in support of their actions.

The fishermen’s concern was rooted in the Magnuson Stevens Fisheries Conservation and Management Act, known in fishing circles as the Magnuson Act. The Act was originally intended as a tool to conserve the nation’s fish resources, but has been used in the eyes of many as a weapon to close many fishing opportunities.

The next rally will be held on March 21, 2012. Fishermen will gather beside the U.S. Capitol, with the intent of uniting commercial and recreational fishing sectors under a common plea to Keep Fishermen Fishing, the official billing for the event. Organizers say the Act is being used by a few big foundations and environmental groups to drive fishermen off the water.
