"Shelter Supply Saturday" began in 2010 to raise awareness and support for local pet shelters. Local groups are often underfunded, or rely entirely on contributions from the public. Too often, local shelters are overlooked as recipients, with contributions going to national groups instead.
Unfortunately, it is a popular misconception that the national groups support local shelters. In fact, only a miniscule fraction of donations made to national groups trickles down to local shelters, usually to finance spay/neuter programs. Most local shelters never see a penny from national groups -- and that's where "Shelter Supply Saturday" comes in.
"Shelter Supply Saturday" is designated as a day to drop off much-needed items such as office supplies, cleaning supplies, or dog and cat food. Contact your local shelter, or if you prefer, Boxer rescue organization for specific items they need, or visit their website to see if they have posted a wish list. If you aren't sure where the shelters or rescues are in your area, a new group, the Humane Society for Shelter Pets, helps connect donors with their local organizations.
If you don't have spare cash, contact your shelter to schedule a time you can come in and help with caring for the animals, organizing supplies, or cleaning the shelter offices. Boxer rescues typically don't have a centralized location or offices, but can also use supplies or monetary donations, people to return phone calls or answer e-mails, or people to do home checks. Anything you can give will be appreciated.
Of course, shelters and rescues can use your support throughout the year. Celebrate your own "Shelter Supply Saturday" on the first Saturday of every month, or of every quarter. Shelters and rescues perform a valuable service to the community -- on "Shelter Supply Saturday" let them know you appreciate their efforts.
