1/30/10 “January Thaw Tribute to Honor Tony Cavagnaro”, 7:00P @ Water Street Music Hall, Rochester, $10 adv / $15 dos
On Saturday, January 30, the Buddhahood will be joined by Two Ton Ska and Roots Collider to celebrate the birthday, life, and music of their departed former frontman Tony Cavagnero. The event itself is named for the song January Thaw, written by Tony.
Two Ton Ska will open the show, followed by a long Buddhahood set featuring over 30 special musical guests. The evening will be capped by the music of Rochester drum as bass band Roots Collider. There will also be a charity raffle with proceeds going to the Tony Cavagnaro Young Musician’s Scholarship Fund and the Calvin Education Fund.
For folks unfamiliar, the Buddhahood is a virtual symphony of rock. Pumped up by an all encompassing drum section that swings the pendulum between wild rock, controlled reggae, and intense tribal beat.Nearly every band member switches between instruments, creating alternate horn and percussive sections. A steel drum often adds a calypso twist to the mix. The Buddhahood does not walk musical lines, it blurs them together creating a stunningly transporting sound.
The band’s spiritual roots shine through in the energy of their crowds. Excited by the music they seem to almost have given completely over to the music, like the musicians themselves. Their enthusiasm, lyrics, and sound are genuinely moving for both the body and the spirit.
Advance tickets can be bought at Aaron’s Alley, or the Record Archive.
“You know it always works out in the end – in the January Thaw” – Tony Cavagnaro
