On October 3 the following announcement was received. This is an important issue that dominates children of all abilities in the public schools and residential treatment facilities. The first step in ending torture in schools is by taking this survey. If a child has Autism or other developmental disability they are more likely to suffer from these actions, however it is not exclusive to them.
ANNOUNCEMENT:
The Alliance to Prevent Restraint, Aversive Interventions and Seclusion (APRAIS) is a coalition of 17 national disability advocacy organizations.
APRAIS is surveying consumers, parents and guardians to establish the extent to which restraint, seclusion and aversive procedures have been used with students with disabilities and special needs (whether served under IDEA or under section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act) in public or private schools or in residential facilities.
Responses are being collected anonymously.
Aggregated survey data will be published in an academic journal and shared with Congress.
The survey will be available for completion until October 12th, 2009. The survey takes about 5 – 10 minutes to complete. You will find a link to the survey at the bottom of this email.
For the purpose of this survey, the following definitions are used:
• Restraint: The use of physical procedures by one or more individuals or mechanical devices in order to limit freedom of movement. Example: Holding an individual in an immobile position for a period of time.
• Seclusion: Placement in an isolated area for an extended period of time and prevention from leaving the area. Example: Placing an individual in a locked room or closet.
• Aversive procedures: Actions taken against a person causing pain or injury. Example: Pinching or slapping an individual.
Please feel free to share this survey with others. We appreciate your help; your input will help inform policymakers about this important issue.

Let me be the first to say how horrific this must be for the children. With all the personal rights bandied about these days, you would think this would never happen.
Cindy, I'm assuming this is a national survey, right? I passed it on through FB because I have a few friends with autistic children. Thank you for sharing this valuable information.
