Seattle will 'go orange' for Hutch's Obliteride

Seattle will be going orange in April. Seattle’s Great Wheel, Pacific Science Center’s arches are just some of the buildings that will light up orange in visual support for Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and the fight to end cancer. Orange is the theme color for the Obliteride, a bicycling fundraiser for cancer research. After successfully raising nearly $2 million in its first year for lifesaving cancer research at Fred Hutch, organizers expect with the community’s help to raise even more in 2014.

The goal of this bike ride goes beyond the money raised, it builds community and personal support for the fight against cancer. Most riders who took part in last year’s Obliteride had in someway been impacted by cancer. Many rode in support of friends or loved ones fighting cancer or to honor those loved ones who died from it. Researchers rode because they passionately believe in what they are doing, and many currently fighting cancer themselves even volunteered. Whatever, participants motivation, they all are committed to this community of cancer fighters.

The Obliteride riders have the opportunity to participate at different levels of fundraising as well as bicycling distances. An option for a 150 mile-ride begins in SODO on August 9 with an overnight in Tacoma at UPS, and finishing in Magnuson Park on Sunday, August 10. Rides of 25, 50, or 100 miles begin and end in Magnuson Park Saturday, August 10. Entry level fundraising is $1000, an amount that according to Obliteride’s Executive Director, Amy Lavin, elevates the Obliteride above an ordinary bike ride to the dedication to end cancer. "Thanks to our generous sponsors, including University Village, 100% of every dollar raised goes directly to lifesaving cancer research that improves cancer care in our community and has far-reaching impacts around the world."

You are invited to go to the Obliteride webpage to sign up, contribute or simply learn about the ride and the research that it supports. Also, watch around town as Seattle “Goes Orange.”
