Macklemore kicked off the 56th Annual Grammy Awards last night by taking home the first award of the night, for Best New Artist. He proceeded to collect 3 more over the course of the evening, for Best New Artist Best Rap Song ("Thrift Shop"), Best Rap Performance ("Thrift Shop") and Best Rap Album ("The Heist")
Over the past year, Macklemore has gone from relatively unknown to a nationally known act, largely thanks to his songs “Thrift Shop” and “Same Love,” and his album, “The Heist” which was released to critical acclaim. It was also announced in December that “Thrift Shop” was Spotify’s most-streamed song of the year, and that the duo had been nominated for seven total Grammys.
He also had one of the most memorable performances of the night. Macklemore and Ryan Lewis teamed up with Mary Lambert, Madonna, and Queen Latifah to sing the hit “Same Love” while 34 same-sex couples got married at the Grammys. The performance was highly publicized before and during the ceremony. Watch the performance in the video.
