The Seattle Mariners have signed starting pitcher Kevin Millwood to a minor-league deal, reported the Seattle Times.
The 37-year old Millwood will have an invitation to spring training, where he will likely compete for a spot in the starting rotation behind ace and former Cy Young winner Felix Hernandez, Justin Vargas, free agent signee Hasashi Iwakuma, and newly acquired Hector Noesi.
With the Mariners, Millwood will be reuinted with manager Eric Wedge, who was his manager with the Cleveland Indians in 2005. That season, Millwood led the American League with a 2.86 earned run average.
Throughout his 15-year major league career, Millwood has won 163, lost 140, and posted a 4.10 ERA. He was selected to the All-Star team in 1999, when he won 18 games with a 2.68 ERA. He made nine starts in four years for the Braves in the postseason, and threw a no-hitter with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2003.
But he has struggled in the past two seasons. In 2010, Millwood won just four of 20 decisions with the Orioles, to go with a 5.10 ERA. He spent most of 2011 with the Yankees and the Red Sox in the minor leagues, before reaching the majors with the Colorado Rockies in August. He won four of seven starts and recorded a 3.98 ERA.
