Seattle Mariners rumors have the team promoting Cole Gillespie and Lucas Luetge. Nick Franklin was sent down to Triple-A Tacoma and Erasmo Ramirez was Single-A High Desert for the time being. According to the report from the team on Thursday (April 24), Ramirez was sent down there in order to stay on schedule with his starts. He could soon be recalled for a double-header against the Oakland Athletics on May 7.
Franklin had been struggling quite a bit with the team, posting a .125 batting average in limited action before he was sent back down. There just wasn't a stable position with the team at this point and the plan is to let him play every day down in Tacoma for a while. This also allowed the team to give the 29-year-old Gillespie a shot. He has been with several teams before, but had posted a .362 batting average and 1.197 OPS with the Rainiers so far. That earned him a promotion.
In the second promotion that came a bit later, the team recalled Luetge to serve as another left-handed pitcher out of the bullpen. There have been several Seattle Mariners rumors about what they might do here, but in the end they decided to go with a familiar face. He was with the team earlier in the season, but posted an 18.00 ERA in two games.
Gillespie is immediately going to be used, as the team has him in left field on Friday night (April 25) against the Texas Rangers. He is an added right-handed bat to use for the night and he will be batting eighth in the order. The team will also be using Willie Bloomquist at shortstop to stick with that theme against Rangers starter Robbie Ross. Game time for that series opener is 7:10 p.m. PT at Safeco Field. Pitching for the Mariners is rookie pitcher Roenis Elias.
