Seattle Mariners recap: Carlos Peguero hits two home runs as Mariners win again

Carlos Peguero is making a lot of Seattle Mariners news in Spring Training. Peguero hit two home runs for the Mariners on Wednesday (Feb. 27), helping the team beat the Cleveland Indiana 5-1. This was already the fifth win in six spring games for the Mariners and it is starting to look like the power outage that the team has been going through in recent seasons could become a thing of the past.

Mariners Hit Three Home Runs Against Milwaukee Brewers

Peguero hit his first home run of the game off of starter Brett Myers in the second inning and followed that with a second shot in the fourth inning. He bumped his batting average to .444 and is showing that the swing he had worked on during winter baseball could really be improved. Peguero is a real long shot to make the Opening Day roster, but if he keeps performing like this the front office is going to have some tough choices ahead.

Adding to the success on offense against the Indians was Kendrys Morales, who had his fist two-hit game of the spring. Raul Ibanez also had two more hits from the designated hitter slot, scoring twice and pushing his spring average to .500. The struggles continued for Dustin Ackley and Casper Wells at the top of the order, though, as their spring averages dropped to .200 and .077 respectively.

As for the pitching, Danny Hultzen got out of a first inning jam to post the win. He would finish with two strong innings of work, striking out four and walking two. After he loaded the bases in the first inning, Hultzen got two outs to escape the drama and then pitched a perfect second inning. Taijuan Walker came in next and pitched two hitless innings of relief. In all, the pitching staff looked really great, with the only run of the game coming on an eighth inning error.

This win elevates the Seattle Mariners to 5-1 in Spring Training 2013 and the team will next take on the San Francisco Giants on Thursday (Feb. 28). Jon Garland will get his first start for the team in a bid to lock down one of the spots in the starting rotation and he will go up against National League Cy Young candidate Matt Cain. Game time is 12:05 p.m. PT.
