The Seattle Mariners pitching staff has put together a great month of June. In fact, the Mariners' pitching staff has been the best in Major League Baseball over the month, helping the team to a 16-9 record during June. On Friday night (June 27) against the Cleveland Indians, Chris Young pitched the team to a nice 3-2 victory. Five relievers finished it off and put yet another game in the win column.

Due to the success of the pitching staff and timely hitting so far this season, the team has posted a 43-37 record that is good enough for the second wild card slot right now. It means that if the season ended today (June 28), that the Mariners would make it into the postseason for the first time since 2001.

According to the updated stats from MLB, the Seattle Mariners' pitching staff is 16-9 with a 2.47 ERA and 1.06 WHIP during the month of June. Those are outstanding numbers and to put it in perspective, the Atlanta Braves have the second best ERA at 2.80. The second best ERA in the American League is 3.16, showing a huge gap between how well the M's are pitching as compared to the rest of the league.

One of the biggest stats that have helped the pitching is the stellar defense that the team has been playing. They have not given up an unearned run in the entire month, showing that the defense is helping keep people off base and allowing the pitchers to have more confidence in ball getting put in play. For the full 2014 MLB season, the team is tied for the best fielding percentage in the AL.

As for some of the pitchers that have been leading the way for the team in June, Felix Hernandez is showing off once again. In five starts he has a 1.49 ERA, 0.77 WHIP, and 45 strikeouts in 36 1/3 innings of work. In the bullpen, Joe Beimel hasn't allowed a run in 10 appearances during the month. Then there is Roenis Elias, who is 4-1 and is allowing a batting average of just .188 in the month.

While there are various Seattle Mariners trade rumors indicating that the team is looking to add another pitcher, the current staff is putting up numbers that would make any front office envious.
