Seattle Mariners outfielder Greg Halman killed, brother held in stabbing

SEATTLE, Washington (Isabelle Zehnder reporting) – Dutch Police said Seattle Mariners outfielder Greg Halman was stabbed to death early Monday and his brother has been arrested as a suspect.

Rotterman Police spokeswoman Patricia Wessels said police were called to a home in the port city early Monday morning and found the 24-year-old Dutch player bleeding from a stab wound. The officers and ambulance paramedics were unable to revive him.

Wessels said police arrested Halman’s 22-year-old brother and, due to Dutch privacy rules, declined to give his name.

"He is under arrest and right now he is being questioned," Wessels told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. "It will take some time to figure out what exactly happened."

No charges have yet been filed in the case.

Halman, 24, played 35 games for the Mariners batting .230 with two home runs and six RBI and was the only Netherlands-born player in the majors, USA TODAY reports.

“All my friends and family are so proud,” Halman said in a June interview with USA TODAY after his call-up to the Mariners.

Halman helped his country win a European championship and was MVP and playing in his country’s top league as a teen.

“Raw talent. That’s what made them sign me,” Halman said of his contract with the Mariners. “I’m playing in that league at 15, hitting with wood. It helped me a lot.” He hit 33 homes in 2010 in Class AAA Tacoma.
