Seattle Mariners news: Alex Liddi sent back to Triple-A Tacoma

In Seattle Mariners news from Friday (March 15), Alex Liddi was sent down to Triple-A Tacoma. Liddi was one of four hitters sent down to Minor League camp on Friday, but because he is on the 40-man roster, Liddi had to be optioned. In addition to Liddi, infielder Stefen Romero and catchers Ronny Paulino and John Hicks were also sent to Minor League camp.

Despite playing well for Team Italy, Liddi struggled at the plate for the Mariners during Spring Training. He was just 2-for-20 at the plate for a .100 batting average, possibly losing out on nabbing one of the bench slots because of it. The team seems set at third base with Kyle Seager, so Liddi had to really put up big numbers this spring to warrant a 25-man roster slot.

Romero and Hicks did pretty well in spring and Mariners fans will likely hear more from them in the near future. Romero might actually be ready now, but the Mariners need to keep him in the lineup on a daily basis and that wouldn't be possible with Seager and Dustin Ackley ahead of him in the depth chart. As for Hicks, he could end up being a very good catching prospect, but its unclear what the team will do with him as Mike Zunino gets closer to the big leagues.

For Alex Liddi, it's possible that this could be the end of the road for him with the Seattle Mariners. Barring an injury, it seems like the team has moved in a different direction and he might soon become the subject of trade rumors as a result.
