Seattle Mariners batting order: Opening Day lineup revealed, Almonte at leadoff

Seattle Mariners batting order rumors had floated around all during Spring Training. Now the Opening Day Seattle Mariners batting order has been revealed and Abraham Almonte will be serving as the leadoff hitter in the first lineup of the season. According to a report from on Monday (March 31), Almonte will also be playing center field for the first game the team plays in 2014. It's an interesting decision by the team, but it will also make it so the lineup doesn't begin with three left-handed hitters against Jared Weaver.

Hitting second in the opener will be shortstop Brad Miller and he is followed by second baseman Robinson Cano. A lot of offense is expected from the middle infield of the team and they will try to get the season off on the right note. Cleanup in the first game is going to be first baseman Justin Smoak, which shows that the team might have really liked what he was doing at Spring Training this year. The offense will need him to come through in the clutch if they are going to put a lot of games in the win column this year.

Batting fifth in the Seattle Mariners batting order is designated hitter Logan Morrison and he is followed by third baseman Kyle Seager, right fielder Michael Saunders, left fielder Dustin Ackley, and catcher Mike Zunino. Ackley had a spectacular spring down in Peoria, but the team likely wants him to prove that he can continue it in the regular season before considering moving him out of the eight spot. Zunino at nine could end up giving the team some interesting power at the back of the lineup if he can find the swing that made him a first-round draft pick.

Pitching on opening night will be former Cy Young Award winner Felix Hernandez. He will look to get the team off on the right start this season at Angel Stadium of Anaheim. The game against the Los Angeles Angels will begin at roughly 7:05 p.m. ET on March 31 and the game will be broadcast on ESPN2.
