Saturday, the Tour de France, bicycling’s own World Cup, began with Stage 1 out of Yorkshire, England. One need not be in Europe or even race, however, to participate. Can’t compete on that grueling stage? Cascade Bike Studio made an offer for the non-Mark Cavendish or Alberto Contador among us. Tenth of the Tour, is the challenge. Those who accepted, signed up by July 3, to ride 20 miles daily for the duration of the Tour. Finishers will receive a Tenth of the Tour t-shirt on July 29th when showing proof of the daily rides.

Tenth of the Tour isn’t the only way for cyclists to celebrate the Tour de France. Hub and Bespoke, a bicycle-themed boutique is hosting a Bastille Day Bike Ride on Saturday, July 12 at 11:00am. A picnic will follow this casual ride of about 5 miles. Keeping with the French theme, riders are invited to come with bread, wine and cheese as well as attired in their best French-inspired apparel. In addition, Petanque will be played at the park. Hub and Bespoke even has a link to the last two Bastille Day Rides if anyone needs some apparel ideas.

It may be more Dutch than French, but hey, Wednesday is the great Seattle Rack-a-thon. RSVP, and support better bike parking in Seattle. Join a committed group of the community at Union Station dedicated to improving bicycling in Seattle. Specifics for the event are:

Wednesday, July 9
2:30-4:30 p.m.
Union Station Great Hall
605 5th Ave S, Seattle WA 98104

Cascade Bicycle Studio isn’t the only option for participating in the Tour de France fever. Map My Ride, the fitness tracking software by mapmyfitness.com, has also offered a challenge. As of today, there are over 30,000 participants, some of whom are already posting some impressive mileage. Riders need merely to sign up online, and post miles either via the Map My Ride app or by posting directly to the website. Prizes are impressive from all finishers as well as the first to post 500 miles receiving leaders jerseys, to a chance to win $100,000 in prizes.

Regardless of your level of involvement or interest in the Tour de France, summer is here, and that brings great bicycling weather to Seattle. How far will you ride?
