The first major junior bout of the northwest roller derby season took place in White Center on Saturday night. The hometown Seattle Derby Brats hosted their long time rivals to the west of Puget Sound, the Kitsap Derby Brats.
Kitsap started off strong, holding a 20-11 lead after the first five jams. But then Seattle took firm control of the game and reeled-off a huge 36-0 scoring run over the next four jams to claim a solid 47-20 lead. Kitsap was able to seemingly hang around during the first half, but their biggest problem was that they weren't able to match the high scoring antics of Seattle during the first 30 minutes. After the first half of play, Seattle held the lead at 97-51.
After stumbling out of the gates at the start of the second half, Kae-Oss put the jammers cap on her noggin for Kitsap and posted their highest point total in one jam on the night with a 17-2 decision that pulled her squad back to within 42 points. But high scoring jams soon after by Enurgizer Bunny, Flyin' Hawaiin and DisLykeHer helped Seattle pull their lead back out to a far more comfortable margin.
Kitsap hung around in there, fighting and clawing for every point they could get. But on this night, they were simply overwhelmed by the speed and clever strategies of the Seattle Derby Brats. Once the final whistle blew, Seattle had claimed a solid 192-101 victory.
Three Stars
3. Chewbeca. The Kitsap blocker led her team in blocking stats and finished 2nd overall in the game with 5 blocked jammers, 2 hole-opening blocks to aid her jammer and leveled one SDB opponent with a big hit that sent her crashing to the floor. She also claimed 4 points in three jams with the star on her lid.
2. Random Max of Violence. Even before looking at the stats, I thought she was the most dominant blocker out there on the night during this game. Max led the blocking charts with 5 blocked jammers, 2 hole-opening assists and buffed the floor with a couple Kitsap skaters on two occasions with big hits.
1. Flyin' Hawaiin. Seattle featured a nice three jammer rotation in this one and the other two skaters in that rotation (Lilly Lightning and Enurgizer Bunny) put up numbers that would probably qualify them for a "star" 75% of the time. But in this one, Flyin' Hawaiin topped them all. I had her down with 61 points in 11 jams run, 9 of which she earned lead jammer status.
Key Jam of the Game
I would have to say it was Enurgizer Bunny's 14-0 decision in the 8th jam of the first half. A couple jams earlier, Kitsap had the lead. Then in the previous jam, Seattle reclaimed that lead. Then Enurgizer's monster scoring run definitely swung all the momentum in this game over to SDB's side and Kitsap never fully recovered.
Bad Girl of the Game
Kitsap's Red Rager led the game in penalty minutes, taking time to think about her wrong-doings in the sin bin for a total of 6 minutes.
