August 24, 2010 - An 18-year-old Puyallup man was arrested Monday night in connection with the death of a developmentally-disabled teen who went missing last week.
According to Det. Ed. Troyer, 16-year-old Kimberly “Kimmie” Daily’s body was found Monday night in a ditch just 12 blocks from her home.
An unidentified 18-year-old suspect was taken into custody and booked into Pierce County Jail on suspicion of first-degree murder.
He is scheduled to make his first court appearance in Kimmie’s death Tuesday afternoon. The suspect’s name has not yet been released as police have yet to file charges in this case.
According to investigators, the suspect led them to Kimmie’s body in the 11400 block of 122nd St. E.
"Our detectives have been working this case, doing canvassing throughout the week. He was an initial contact during the initial canvassing, and we went back to him based on some discrepancies he'd given us," said Sgt. Mike Blair.
"He agreed to sit down and talk to our detectives today, and eventually tonight he decided to lead our detectives over here to the outdoor crime scene."
It is not known if Kimmie knew the suspect.
"From what I gather, he was a neighborhood face; I wouldn't even say an acquaintance. He's just someone who's in the area," said Blair.
At 16 Kimmie functioned at the level of a 9-year-old girl due to a disability since birth.
Her father, Cecil Daily, said he began to worry when she didn’t make it to a friend’s house on Tuesday.
According to Cecil, his daughter left for a friend’s house on her bike but never made it there. She wasn’t seen again until her body was found Monday evening.
Search for Kimmie
Toward the end of last week police sent out search groups that searched for Kimmie from the air and on the ground. They used tracking dogs and helicopters, and even tried to pinpoint a signal from her cell phone that could not be located.
Hope faded Sunday when police made the decision to scale back search efforts based on a lack of evidence.
Polygraph tests were given to both Cecil Daily and Kimmie’s grandmother over the weekend. They both passed. Police said the tests were given as a standard practice in such situations.
The victim's cause and manner of death have not been determined.
"We're in the preliminary stages of processing the scene," Blair said. "We're in the process of gathering our resources to work the scene."
