Seattle 101: Four Fun Things to Do in the U-District

If you’re new in town, welcome to Seattle!  Now it’s time for you to get out …

Out and about, that is. This marks the first piece in a series about the various neighborhoods around Seattle.  Think of the four fun tips as a scavenger hunt, of sorts -- an excuse to get out and explore the beautiful new city you now call home.

Let’s start things off with the U-District -- home to the University of Washington.  This neighborhood is often overlooked as a spot worth visiting in favor of the excitement downtown.  But there are some surprising gems there, as well.  Here are a few to start you off:

1.) Japanese Garden/Washington Park Arboretum – The Washington Park Arboretum captures the unbridled natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest in a beautiful urban green space near lake Washington. Be sure to make a special trip to the Japanese Garden while you’re there -- take yourself through the grounds or stop in for one of their special tea ceremonies and public tours.

2.) Agua Verde Café & Paddle Club – I can’t think of a better way to spend an afternoon than kayaking, followed by fresh Mexican food and margaritas on the lake.  Lines can sometimes be long, so plan accordingly and try and go at off-peak hours.  Can't get a kayak there? You can always try your luck renting a boat at the UW Waterfront Activities Center.

3.) Burke Museum & Henry Art Gallery – Newcomers from cities like New York or L.A. might not think much of Seattle’s museums.  But the University of Washington campus is home to a museum and a gallery that are well worth a visit.  The Burke Museum is a natural history and culture museum, and the Henry Art Gallery is a contemporary art center featuring exhibitions, films, and lectures.

4.) Shopping on University Way (a.k.a. “The Ave”) – The Ave is home to some pretty fantastic vintage and second-hand stores like Red Light and Buffalo Exchange.  It’s also sprinkled with the used bookstores and music stores that have managed to hang on over the years.  If you’re there on a Saturday, be sure to check out the Farmers Market.  You won’t leave empty-handed.

Stay tuned for more … next stop Fremont.
