Ah, spring! It’s been a long time coming, it seems, and it feels as if this winter has been longer than usual. Certainly, those of us in the upper half of the planet more than ready for the change of season that signals rebirth. Buds are waiting patiently for the signal to open and bloom, birds are beginning to sing their mating songs and pairing up, and most of the ground dwelling animals are starting to stir and stick their noses outside their dens and thickets to see if spring has truly arrived.
Around this time of year, we all start looking towards the warming of the earth like starving plants, ourselves. It’s as if we all need to feel the warmth of the spring sun on our faces to come alive again, especially after the long winter of “hibernating” inside our houses and workplaces. So now, as our minds and bodies search for the sun’s warmth, so does our inner spirit search for the warmth of the inner light and love that fuels our souls. Though this search never really stops, there are times when we can’t seem to feel that connection, especially when our outer climate appears dreary and never ending.
Everything and everyone is truly connected, and it is never more evident than the change of earthly seasons from winter to spring. Just when we think that this change will never come, like a thrown switch, we feel an upsurge of energy, a certain ‘something’ in the air, and a stirring within us. Just as winter gives us time for contemplation, and integration of lessons learned in the warm seasons of the past, spring jump starts us and wakes us up to a new season of growth and learning.
So when you walk outside this spring to lift your face to the sun, listen to the robin’s song, and see the greening of the earth around you, remember that each of us is part of the whole, and that our spirits are being reborn as well. Take the opportunity to reconnect to that innermost spark that gives us life.
