It's dead, Jim. Rumors that the sixth season of "Jersey Shore" would be its last have proven true, as MTV announced on Thursday that the reality TV show about over-tanned, over-loud, over-drinking, and over-sexed housemates will be canceled after its current season.
"Jersey Shore" was the highest-rated show in the history of MTV. Some called that a sad commentary on the show's viewership. The hit nature of the show not only glorified behavior that most would shun, but turned folks with "names" like Snooki, The Situation, and Jwoww into celebrities who could gain entrance into places that others could not.
Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi, perhaps the biggest "star" of the show, confirmed the news on Twitter. “Yes, sadly it’s true. This upcoming season of Jersey Shore will be our last. But it was fricken INSANE. I will always love my roomies.”
In addition, Snooki won't be out of the spotlight, at least for one more season. Her "Snooki & JWoww" has been renewed for a second season.
The sixth and final season will begin on Oct. 4, as we already knew. In addition, MTV will air a retrospective special, “Gym, Tan, Look Back,” on Sept. 6.
