Season of the biker

An interesting thought occurred to me today – that the seasons of the year seem to last twice as long for bikers.  By that I mean we wait (impatiently) soooo many months for the snow and ice to disappear, then for the cold weather to warm up, all the while itching to get back on the bikes and on the road.  Then comes the Spring and one day you hear the first roar of a motorcycle running down your street and all is right with the world again.  Summer comes and you get used to seeing packs of bikers riding together, often in support of a charity or in honor of someone or something.

Whenever Labor Day rolls around, we all naturally get to thinking about Fall – we get our kids ready to go back to school, we walk through the shopping malls and suddenly all the summer stuff is gone and the stores are draped with the colors of Autumn.  Then there’s the Christmas Tree Shop, which already, in fact, LAST WEEK, had their Christmas decorations out.  The apple cinnamon and pumpkin spice candles are sitting on the shelves waiting for our Fall-conditioned brains to pause and sniff (and buy, of course).

What is ironic though is that while most people around me (family members, co-workers) seem to be geared toward the coming season, the bikers around me are still at rest in the Summertime.  Yes, we all know this is the last month of Summer, but it IS STILL SUMMER!  I have seen absolutely no movement by the bikers in my world to even consider slowing down or start to think about storing their bikes for the winter.  No way, contrary to that, I’m being asked when the next ride is scheduled!  As you will see from my Friday event listings, there is no shortage of biker events anytime in the near future.  Just as we wait what seems like an eternity for the Winter to be gone, the bikers in our midst are making the most of every day, every moment, every last second, of this New York Summer.  We may be in some respects (especially if you have schoolchildren), forced to tune in to the Fall flurry, the school fundraisers that encourage you to order those Christmas gifts early, blah, blah, blah….but this year, when you see a biker riding well into October, stop and think of a prayer for his/her safety.  Realize that he/she is “seizing the day,” as bikers do so well, and hopefully you will feel the warmth of your own Summer just a little longer.  Enjoy this September!
