It's the country boys versus the city boys, each trying to wrestle away the heart of one southern belle on the new season of "Sweet Home Alabama." And judging from the first episode, it's gonna get ugly up in here y'all.
Now, you have to figure that on a show on a country music network, there's going to be a bit of a bias against those city slickers, but having said that, the city boys aren't exactly presenting themselves too well, especially two of them. Anyone who watched the episode probably wanted to see that car salesman, Todd Doram, get the boot. He actually gave her a cheesy, pick-up line sale pitch on their first one on one. Ew.
And then there's Shaun Bighead...uh, Bigos, I mean... the rude New Yorker who thinks he's better than everyone else. Can you say "douchebag?" Unfortunately, even if our heroine, Paige Duke eliminates him in her mind, one has to wonder if there might be some manipulating behind the scenes to have him stay a while, just to stir up trouble and drama for ratings. Although the previews for next episode promise plenty of testosterone posturing, to be sure, including Mr. New Yorker openly mocking the cowboy hat. In Alabama.
Oh no you didn't.
In the end, the first two unlucky guys to be eliminated in a field of 22 included the painfully mismatched Christian O'Rourke, a long-haired, heavily-tattooed drummer from New Jersey. No surprise. But it was surprising when southern boy Matt Beard, a mechanic and drag racer from Florida. Duke was afraid she would be "one of the guys" with him, breaking his heart.
On the flipside, cowboy Shaun Smith was tongue-tied and nervous on the first meeting, but charmed his way into first date status. So far the southern boys show some solidarity and were somewhat happy she choose one of them, even if not each particular individual. Time will tell if those southern boys keep sticking together.
As far as the rest of the field, some quick predictions: Those who seem to be in for the long haul include fellow Carolina boy Andy Batkins, cowboy Bubba Thompson, NASCAR driver Danny Bopp, pro baseball player Christian Lopez, musician Dustin Fallgatter from Nashville and Jersey boys Dustin Tavella and Joey Vida.
Best bets for those about to get the axe include the awful Bigos and Doram, poker player Ryan Borup (no old-fashioned gal looking for a stable home is going for a poker player) and Severn Lang, the LA hairstylist and handbag designer -- no southern belle can take a guy that soft home.
The rest...hard to tell just yet. But expect things to shape up more in the next episode, and expect the sparks to fly, as the previews already show some fists swinging. Buckle your seatbelts, folks.
