Seaside Heights is set to begin welcoming back residents, next week, for the first time since Hurricane Sandy. The devastated Jersey shore community will begin allowing re-population on Monday, January 7. That makes this the last weekend, in more than two months, residents will be prohibited from residing in their homes. The town, made famous on MTV's "Jersey Shore", has remained uninhabitable due to Sandy's extensive damage to homes, businesses, roads, and infrastructures include a complete re-haul needed to the main gas line.
Seaside Heights boardwalk rebuilding to begin with or without federal aid
Until now, property owners have only been able to access their homes and businesses during daylight hours. But, under a plan laid out last month, that will all change on Monday with the borough welcoming back residents for the first time in more than two months. Seaside Heights, like many towns along the Jersey shore, was under a mandatory evacuation order ahead of the October 29 storm. Most residents, never imagining they wouldn't return full-time for months, left with very little.
The first phase of re-population, which allowed businesses to open their doors, started on December 12. The full-time return of Seaside Heights residents is the next phase. The third and fourth phases are expected to start on February 1 and March 1 and will involve residential rentals and hotel/motels respectively.
