After Illinois had just given Sears Holdings an extremely ‘sweet tax cut deal’ to keep it from leaving Illinois as they had previously threatened, politicians were extremely disappointed, shocked, and angered when the firm said it was cutting over 100 stores. The week after Christmas, Sears surprisingly announced that its holiday sales were extremely disappointing and cuts to Sears and K-Mart stores would come fast and furiously.
In the days that followed, Democratic Illinois Governor Pat Quinn - who orchestrated the extremely controversial and unpopular Illinois 67% tax increase on businesses during a lame duck session in Illinois Congress early last January which opened the exit door to companies leaving Illinois throughout 2011 - spoke with Sears about its announcement. Quinn, and now the public, learned that the store closures were not affecting Illinois at all. Whether it was a ‘thank you’ to Illinois for the extremely ‘sweet tax cut deal’ is not known to the public.
Many are questioning, however, the stores in Illinois that never seem to have many cars in their parking lots yet escaped the store closures by Sears.
Comments from the public such as:
Why isn't the Willowbrook K-Mart getting closed? One hardly ever sees more than twenty cars in its parking lot, and most of those are probably employees’ cars.
Similar comments are being made about Sears outlets in other Chicago suburban areas such as Tinley Park as well.
