Searching for owner of dog found with embedded collar in PA

Do you recognize this dog? Pennsylvania Humane Society Police Officer Marlene Metzger is hoping someone will.

Around five years old, the unneutered male Shiba Inu/Spitz type of dog was found in Beach Lake near Morman Corners on Monday, March 17.

It is unknown if the dog was tied outside and broke free, or if he was neglected and outgrew the collar that wasn't changed, but part of a broken chain collar was embedded in his neck. Metzger, with Dessin Animal Shelter in Honesdale, PA, said the necrotic tissue on the collar “smelt like road kill.”

A Cherry Ridge Veterinary Clinic doctor, where the dog was treated, believes the collar was like this for weeks or even months.

Described as a sweet, nice, easy-going boy, the dog didn’t even require sedation while he was clipped and cleaned. He is thin, being treated for anemia, and is expected to heal quickly.

The dog is considered evidence during the ongoing investigation but is currently in foster care, where he was named Timber.

The search is now on for his owners. If found, the person responsible will be charged with animal cruelty, a summary offense. If convicted, the person can face a fine of $50-$750, and up to 90 days in jail.

Anyone with information about the dog’s owners is being asked to call Officer Metzger at (570) 493-3377. Your call will be kept confidential.
