The Maricopa County Sheriff's Department in Arizona issued a search warrant early Wednesday morning at the Green Acre dog boarding facility in Gilbert reported myfoxphoenix.com.

According to Sheriff Joe Arpaio and the Maricopa County Sheriff's Department, 28 dogs were kept in a 9 x12 laundry room when one of the dogs chewed through the drywall and the electrical cord which controlled the air conditioning for the room on June 21. There were 23 dogs who died in the tragedy.

Forensic experts are at the scene examining the electrical equipment in the room. Also, deputies are now reported to be digging in the backyard possibly searching for more buried dogs. The owners of the facility have stated they lost one of their own dogs that tragic night. They told authorities they buried the dog in their backyard. According to Sheriff Joe Arpaio:

"I'm just confused, putting 28 dogs in a 9 by 12 room? There's something wrong there...with one little vent."

The owners of the facility, Todd and MaLeisa Hughes were out of town, and the son of U.S. Sen. Jeff Flake, Austin Flake and his wife, Logan, 21, were in charge of the facility. The young couple told authorities the accident happened between Thursday night at 11:00 p.m. and Friday morning at 5:30 a.m. Twenty dogs died that night. Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio contacted the Hughes in Provo, Utah.

The Facebook page The Tragedy at Green Acre Dog Boarding Gilbert, AZ has garnered over 20,000 "likes."

Just recently, the dog Valor, who had escaped that night from the kennel was found dead on the side of the road a few miles away from the facility. The owners want justice for their dogs; animal lovers want to make sure tragedies like this don't happen again and bring more awareness to conditions of boarding facilities.
