Our County Extension Office is full of good ideas for topics such as gardening, child care, support hotlines, and finances and other topics for the smart home economist. Des Moines area frugal families may also want to check out their blog with recipes and fun quiz to get new ideas on what is frugal, what is nutritious, and what saves time. The blog goes beyond frugality and introduces nutrition into the grocery equation. It also has Spanish language resources and readers can submit questions. A visit will also instruct shoppers in best practices that are often touched upon in this column -- to plan (make a list and have a budget), to shop (pointers for each aisle or food group), and to eat (nutritious, money- and time-saving meals ).
The county also has kits to check out -- your kids can learn about health, home, and other topics with a number of kits available for check out. I suggest calling or visiting as the link is not current on the website.
